The biggest mistake people make with WordPress websites is 100% avoidable, so why are so many people still making this mistake?  What’s the mistake you ask?  The number one mistake is not keeping your WordPress software up to date and on the most current version (this goes for WordPress themes, plugins, and WordPress base software).

You might be thinking, “what’s the big deal?”  If you are like me, evrytime Microsoff word or some other program offers to download an update you just click off of it and say you’ll do it later. This works ok for computer software that isn’t visited daily by strangers all over the internet, but it doesn’t work when it comes to websites. WordPress is an increbibly robust website system, but if you are using outdated versions of the software you can create serious security risks for your website.

You may be leaving yourself open to be hacked or have malware installed by someone up to no good without you even knowing. This malware installs in the backend of your hosting and uses your website to send out spam and do other dubious things.

Why leave yourself open to these threats if you don’t have to?

It is easy and free to make these updates, all it takes is a little time.

Here are the steps you can take to update your WordPress website and close this potential security breech:

  1. Login to your website by visiting www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
  2. Backup your website. You can download free plugins for this or contact us and we can do it for you for a small fee
  3. Click on Dashboard > Updates to be taken to the update screen, you can also look for two arrows in a circle at the top left of your website, this will take you to the update screen as well
  4. Choose the items you want to update and click “Update Now”

That’s all it takes.

Perform this task for your themes, plugins, and WordPress Installation at least monthly.
